The Color Room #43 and a Video

The the Color Room and Shimmerz teamed up in January to bring you palettes and prize!  For this week's palette, I created a video for Shimmerz Education Vlog: customizing a Prima paintable paper using Shimmerz Vibez: Sunset Strip, Princess, and Spritz Sea Foam.  I am excited that I finally used this paper that I've hoarded for three years :)  Not only that, I also cut into some Daisy D papers from six years ago, oh yeah, talk about a hoarder reducing stash!

I should mention that you can see in this still that I am using a cloud/hills shape as a misting template.  It is just to get some general curves.  You'll see what I mean.

And finally, this is the layout I completed using the customized paper in the video for the Color Room palette 43.  This has to be explained because you can't see what they have in their hands: green worms they plucked from the baby bokchoys in our garden!!  eeeewww...

Can you see the shimmering on the paper?  I love how it turned out so pastel and beautiful like the palette!  Thank you for checking this out!  Stop thinking about the little green worms crawling in their hands... eeeeww...

So We Do Math...

Father and daughter did an experiment exploring the concept of the number π on Pi Day (3/14/2010).  I provided the circles and the strings and was the photojournalist on hand.

This layout uses mostly the Elementary collection from Studio Calico. I received it along with contributor copies from Scrapbook and Cards Today last month. I adore this collection: it's so versatile! Obviously in this case, the number sheet is immediately put to use since we are dealing with an never ending series of non-repeating numbers after the decimal :) The numbers are SRM Stickers's We've Got Your Number.  I thought having these numbers on circles is only too appropriate :)  Next time I scrap these photos, I'm gonna have a die-cut apple pie or something on the page!  Why didn't I think of that before?!

I am off to CHA tomorrow!  I hope to see some of you there!  Maybe Fancy Pants will have a funny photo booth again. I need a new photo! lol.

Assemble an Accordion Album

I took a class probably eight or ten years ago on making an accordion album.  It was very easy and fun to do, especially if you start with an accordion album kit which you can get at Dick Blick.  So I made this video assembling an accordion album: cover the chipboard pieces for the front and back cover, use ribbon pieces to tie the album together. I explain why I use Helmar's Quick-fix adhesive runner to cover the chipboards. Then later I switch to the 450 Quick Dry to put the pages into the album. So far, the album remains as you see here, I might decorate it further in the future.  No matter what I do or don't do with it, this album will be put up for my work's annual United Way auction this coming October.

My personal favorite is using ribbons to tie the album together :) So check it out, I even have a relatively good hair day in the video! LOL. Thank you for watching!

She Loves School

This has been a busy week of fun blogging, now that it is winding down and I'm getting ready for the big games on Sunday. I predict Packers and Steelers in the Super Bowl. :)

Here's a layout about my First Grader. I used Midnight Rooster's January kit: Farmer's daughter. This paper from Studio Calico's elementary collection just demands some kind of school related page. While I was working with the kit, she happened to be on winter break from school, and couldn't wait for the break to be over and be back at school.  So I asked her to write down why she loved school so much in her own handwriting.  It was requested that she practice on a piece of scratch paper first before moving to the actual journaling blocks that I had cut out :)

It's so funny that she wrote that Art is her favorite subject.  Really?  Is it because she sees me scrapbooking all the time? What about math, girl?  We all want to raise well balanced children right? So a couple of nights ago, I was working on a giant spreadsheet for work, I called her over and told her, "Look, Mama is doing math!"  Gosh, what an embarrassingly feeble attempt, lol!  I'm so pathetic!  For the record, she was unimpressed, lol!

Here is proof that all Chinese mothers aren't, nor do they wish to be, Chinese Mothers! I did not demand perfection that the journaling be free from defects and correction marks. I do however, take joy knowing that she enjoys school and looks forward to learning and interacting with her friends.  It's much closer to one of those intensely high highs described in this article. I am, by my own admission, a parent junkie, and a Chinese one at that :)

Shimmering in the Color Room 42

For Karen Foster Design mega giveaway posts, please scroll down.

I am back with the Color Room creations finally after a two-weeks hiatus.  I hit a brick wall with the past two palettes and nothing was coming together. I needed to break free of the brick wall, so I went where I am most comfortable and whipped out this layout :)  I painted the H2O with Shimmerz Pearlz Blue By You.  I used SRM Stickers Waterfun around the border of the Graphic 45 paper.  Studio Calico PP provided the ultimate background both behind and in front of the G45 paper :)  I have hundreds of pictures of the two of them on these slides, so there will be many future layouts on this subject matter.

The sponsor for the Color Room this month is Shimmerz, enter your projects using the color palette and be eligible to win a Shimmering package of products from Shimmers.  For that matter,  have you seen Shimmerz' new products Shimmeringz and Coloringz?  They are now listed in the shop so you can see the individual bottles! And look at this flower out of white cardstock that was sprayed with Pink Stiletto Coloringz and Heavy Metal Shimmerz!

Winners and Winter

Happy Sunday everyone!  Thank you so much for entering my idea book giveaway!  I appreciate all of your comments and I decided to draw two winners: Teacher Jessy, and Alexandra S.M..  Please email me your address.

Please check back tomorrow as Karen Foster Design kick off CHA sneaks and the BIG giveaway of KFD products!

The Cosmo Cricket's January challenge is up yesterday at its blog.  Gundrun is hosting the challenge to scrap a layout about January.  That is a very tough subject matter for me because I truly despise winter and I live in Minnesota!  However, her challenge was just what I needed to motivate me as it moved my thoughts to a set of beloved and never before used stamps from Studio Calico: months.  When I sat down to pull out my Cosmo goodies, the concept of the layout came together very quickly when I saw the big chipboard swirls from Jolly by Golly.

There is a story behind the Mitten Weather papers I'm using here. I was at Scrapfest last year.  The event was over and all the booths were cleaning up and clearing out. I saw the Cosmo booth and decided to stop by to say hi to Lindsay and Julie.  They were taking down their display and had these rolled up Mitten Weather papers in a bucket.  Julie asked me if I wanted them, she probably see me wiping drools off my face a few times.  I gladly took them home and uncurled them and set them under boxes of heavy stuff until last night.  Thank you Cosmo Cricket, Lindsay, and Julie :)  I said I would do something with the papers, so here it is.

I spritzed the left and right hand side borders of the layout with Shimmerz Vibez in Princess.  The color matches Mitten Weather perfectly. I thought the layout needed a bit of messy splatters: we are talking about January after all!  I stamped "January" around the edge of the patterned papers in a soft lavender color to match the papers.  When First Born saw these mittens and my hand stitching, she said, "oh, it's like the mittens are hanging!"  Yeah, glad it's not unobvious :)  Lastly, I added the year sticker from SRM Stickers 2011.

We are having friends over to make popsicles using my new Zoku.  It sounds so counter intuitive given the weather outside, but what else are we going to do? Sledding?  Yeah, no, lol.

Berry Sweet

I'm distraught over the NFL results this weekend, how about you?  I don't wanna talk about it, sigh...  However, Nitasha, the winner of the Midnight Rooster mini-kit, please contact michelle.burry@sbcglobal.net with your mailing address asap.  If you did not win, there's always next month, and please check back in the next week or so, I'll be giving away an idea book!

Oh let's discuss get back to discussing scrapbooking...
I bought my Cricut Expression over two years ago around Thanksgiving.  I went to Walmart and stood there waiting like a complete fool for an hour for the salesperson to check the back for more Black Friday deals. Never mind that, apparently shopping at Walmart at 6 a.m. on Black Friday is just too late for the really good deals!

In the last year, the cartridges that appeal to me are coming in great abundance! I have added to my collection considerably.  So I challenged myself to incorporate Cricut cuts into my projects more.  Here is a 2-pager using  the just released January Midnight Rooster kit, Farmer's Daughter. The layout is, gulp, another strawberry picking layout. What can I say? One day a year of picking them, a lifetime of scrapping them. I used the Country Life cartridge (bought it at $20, what a deal!) to cut the bucket load of strawberries you see in the close-up. The strawberry image on the Country Life cartridge is a single berry.  I just cut six and clustered them together to evoke the look of the bucket filling up.

See that gorgeous handmade flower in the photo?  It comes as shown in the kit. Fantabulous, no?! To get the kit, just click here

January Midnight Rooster Giveaway

For a change, I'm going to post my most favorite layout from the January Midnight Rooster kit first. These photos are from a couple of years ago, and finally, I scrap this period of her life when doing puzzles was her number one entertainment.  Seriously, anytime, anywhere, she was ready to put together her puzzles!

For my layout, in my resolve to use my Cricut more, I cut out the puzzle pieces using the My Community cartridge.  I quite love how they enhance the theme of my layout.

Here are some closeups of the puzzle pieces and the stitching. I think hand-stitching always add that air of sophistication to a layout. Oh it sure was time consuming, but I do enjoy the mindless activity of stitching once I make up my mind to do it :)

Now onto the giveaway. Look at this glorious mini-kit.  Good golly, I wish I'm eligible to win!!  Seriously, how fun, how bright, how cheerful, how totally me, eh??  Who wants to win it for me??  lol.

Okay, so here's the drill.  You have until midnight Sunday to answer my question on this post to be eligible to win this mini-kit.  I will post the winner on Monday and the winner must respond by midnight Monday to claim this drool worthy mini-kit!  Now drum roll for my question... How many home teams will win their NFL wildcard games this weekend?  For extra credit, which teams? :)

More Work in Progress, Completed.

I have more projects to share with you using the January WIP kit.  I really adore the combination of the red, black and cream.  I thought DH's red shirt plays very well with these papers and embellishments from the kit.
This second layout is a little info about Franklin Court in Philadelphia. I started scrapbooking to document the photos I take on trips.  In my opinion, travel photos are the most difficult photos to scrap... I mean if I take a picture of a scenery, exactly which part can I trim out?  Yeah...  One thing to "combat" that is to print them into smaller photos, even then, I think they are more challenging to scrap.

However, I'm always happy with layouts like this one.  I went on the trip, I took the pictures to remember, I have journaling, and the design isn't half bad.  This is a huge part of me as a scrapbooker: long before it was a creative hobby or an artistic endeavor, it was about 'what, when, and why the photos...'

I love scrapbooking!

When You Believe

This layout is done using the Work in Progress January kit.  While that kit is sold out, take a peek at the February kit add-on, can somebody say October Afternoon?  swoooon...

The layout is best explained by its journaling:

In the last few weeks, the kids and I got hooked on the song “When You Believe,” the theme song of the Prince of Egypt movie. Amelie in particular calls it her favorite song. I have it on the playlist with GrooveShark, every time we get to this song, she would loudly proclaim that it is her favorite song! We listen to it on Youtube in Mandarin most of the time, and I must say, the lyrics are very inspirational, no matter what language!

I peeled off the Jillibean Soup sticker sheet's "negative" and used it to enhance the patterned paper.  Misting using the sticker negatives as a template would have worked as well.
Well, the Vikings season is officially over.  Whatever I may or may not believe, it's gonna have to wait till later this year.  I believe... there will be an NFL season come this September...  :)

Adventure to Kick off 2011

Happy New Year everyone!

I have completed my first layout of 2011 that I started last night :)  It still counts right? Remember I bought three kits from Sweet Peach Crop Shop a few weeks ago? I dug into their December 2010 kit and the sketch of the month to create this layout.  As soon as I saw the kit, I know there will be a lot of Yellowstone scrapping using it!  The pairing of October Afternoon Campfire and Basic Grey's Marjolaine is just so perfect. The colors work so well together!  Anyway, enough gushing really, click on the kit links at your own risk, because their January kit is up, and oh my oh my oh my...

Here are my kids off to their big adventure at Yellowstone.  Sometimes they would hold hands and go ahead of us.  That never lasted long though, not where there are sulfur smokes all over (which you can see in the photos).

How cute is this little owl?  It is a handmade item in the kit.  It's amazing that I used it immediately, normally, this type of thing gets hoarded for years, lol.  I also hand stitched around the big green circle.  Lastly, I used a few SRM Stickers, really perfect accent for this layout.  They are not included in the kit, but you can find it here

My family caught a movie this morning: Tangled.  Wow, what a great movie!  I admit that I cried when the lanterns went up into the sky.  What an uplifting movie and so totally adorable and cute.  After that, we caught a few sales in the mall, now the kids are tired and cranky, oh well, ours is not a life in a fairytale movie, that's for sure!  lol.
