Here's a layout about my First Grader. I used Midnight Rooster's January kit: Farmer's daughter. This paper from Studio Calico's elementary collection just demands some kind of school related page. While I was working with the kit, she happened to be on winter break from school, and couldn't wait for the break to be over and be back at school. So I asked her to write down why she loved school so much in her own handwriting. It was requested that she practice on a piece of scratch paper first before moving to the actual journaling blocks that I had cut out :)
It's so funny that she wrote that Art is her favorite subject. Really? Is it because she sees me scrapbooking all the time? What about math, girl? We all want to raise well balanced children right? So a couple of nights ago, I was working on a giant spreadsheet for work, I called her over and told her, "Look, Mama is doing math!" Gosh, what an embarrassingly feeble attempt, lol! I'm so pathetic! For the record, she was unimpressed, lol!
Here is proof that all Chinese mothers aren't, nor do they wish to be, Chinese Mothers! I did not demand perfection that the journaling be free from defects and correction marks. I do however, take joy knowing that she enjoys school and looks forward to learning and interacting with her friends. It's much closer to one of those intensely high highs described in this article. I am, by my own admission, a parent junkie, and a Chinese one at that :)

Just so adorable!
she's adorable - and the layout is totally awesome!
Woohoo - go stillers! Only because it makes everyone on the bus, at the supermarket, etc much happier.
Hmm, my favorite subject in school was art when I was in elementary school too! :) Math was my fave subject in high school though. No worries, it can change. :)
Haha, I was wondering if you had seen that article. My mom wasn't a typical Chinese mother either -- I was in my school plays as a side part in junior high and my mom even helped make props. Hah. And I didn't make the math team in junior high and it was a-ok. Most of the time my mom would make me stop reading and go outside and play. Hah. Although both my brother and I went (er go to for my little bro) to top colleges so I think people probably think we had a crazy Chinese childhood. Anyways, the Battle Hymm book Amy Chau wrote is on my to-read list.
Anyways, I'm sure you're sick of my rambles.... anyways, love the fact that you used her writing for the journaling! So cute! Your daughter is adorable!

That is so cute, and sure to be treasured for a looonnnggg time. I don't know about your school district, but here they sure are pushing children to learn more and more at a younger and younger age.
So, I have my card ready to post for the Color Room! I couldn't pass up the challenge from you. Do I have to sign on for that?
What a great page, Jing-Jing. Very art-ful and delightful! Love the hand journaling that your dd did. this will be a treasured page for sure!
Super cute layout! I had that upbringing and am NOT doing it to my kids.
So darn cute! Love it.
Love your cutie's photo and the layout--as always! I admit, I am more Westernised as a mother, but that doesn't mean I don't say I love you to my kids (see http://www.cnn.com/2011/OPINION/01/20/lac.su.tiger.mother.scars/index.html?iref=allsearch). YEs, I think the academic expectation is still high, but now I learn the foremost important thing is...let them/me be happy! That's why I'm into my hobby (LOL)! I'm definitely not the tiger parent..although my kids may think otherwise still! I'm MUCH more relaxed than most Chinese mothers--that's all I can say :)
cute pic of your daughter and love how u include her journalling on the layout :)
Moi aussi je craque complètement pour ta page et ton adorable fille! super l'idée d'incorporer son écriture!

Great picture and layout!! I love that you had her practice first before writing on the journaling spots...I would have done the same thing. Lol.
Love the layout and the photo Jing-Jing! I say ask any kid at primary school their favourite subject and you're likely to get PE, recess or art. :D

Fab page and cute photo! Love that you let her journal in her own handwriting!
I love the way you did on this layout, your dd will cherish this when she's old enough. I haven't read the book yet, but I heard that on the radio few weeks ago. Hey... thanks for the link dear friend.
